How to pet-proof your home?

Are you planning to bring home a pet? A pet not only brings immense joy but also fills your home with positivity. Owning a pet comes with responsibilities, especially for those who own puppies or kittens. From the kitchen area, the study room to the bedroom, every corner of the house possesses danger that pet owners often tend to ignore.

Let’s delve deep into how you can pet-proof your home and make it a safe haven for your pets.

Kitchen

The most challenging task for a pet owner is to keep their pet away from the kitchen area. From food items to kitchen accessories, pets can harm themselves while playing with these items. To keep pets away from the kitchen area, one of the smartest ways is to install a gate or a door.

Bathroom and laundry room

Detergents, soaps, and cleansers are some of the common hazardous items found in the bathroom that pets can easily swallow. In addition, unclean pots, if left open, can pose a threat for pets, as they tend to drink the dirty water from the pot. To avoid any mishap, try to keep your bathroom accessories in a designated space that can’t be easily accessed by your pet.

Wires and switches

Wires and cords, if left unattended, can electrocute your pet, which can be life-threatening. As a precautionary measure, try to keep open wires or electrical appliances away from your pet. Use cable wraps or spiral cord protectors to cover the wires. In addition, you can also mount wires at a high space to keep them away from the reach of your pet.

Covered balconies

Keep your balconies covered, especially if you live in a high rise, as pets have a tendency to explore heights, and they might jump. Install bars, screens, or fiberglass in your balconies to act as a barrier restricting them from jumping.

Create a designated pet space.

Building a cozy corner for your pet to sit and relax is a good practice to start training your dog about boundaries. In the absence of a designated space, pets tend to jump around your bed and other furniture pieces and might end up hurting themselves. As cats require minimal space, converting bedside drawers or cabinet drawers is a great way to create space if you have space crunch issues.

Anti-skid flooring

Avoid slippery floors that make the pets skid or lose balance while running. Replace your flooring with an anti-skid tiled or hardwood flooring.  Slippery flooring can lead to falls or joint injuries, especially among old or young dogs that find it difficult to maintain balance.

Protect your houseplants from pets

To keep your pets away from the reach of household plants that might be toxic, use barriers like fences or mount your plants on a higher shelf to keep them away from the reach of the pets. Always choose non-toxic plants that are safe for your pets in case they accidentally swallow a piece of it. Additionally, use natural deterrents like diluted lemon juice for spraying your houseplants.
